March 17-19, 2008 “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”
A group of twelve employees recently participated in the first EPL leadership event in Chesterfield Missouri. The three day session included participation in a customized training session based on the “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” book by Stephen Covey, a one day Leadership Summit and tours of the Monsanto Life Sciences Center and the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center. Keith Duff gave a presentation entitled “Substantial Equivalence (SE) Testing of Food & Feed Products” for researchers at the Danforth Center.

The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center is a not-for-profit research institute with a global vision to improve the human condition. Research at the Danforth Center will enhance the nutritional content of plants to improve human health, increase agricultural production to create a sustainable food supply, and provide the scientific ideas and technologies that will contribute to the economic growth of the St. Louis region and of the State of Missouri.

The Danforth Center was founded in 1998 in partnership with the Missouri Botanical Garden; Monsanto; Purdue University; the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; the University of Missouri, Columbia; and Washington University.
March 1-7, 2008 Two employees, Hank Scobell and Nancy Purdeu attended the Pittcon 2008
The 2008 Pittsburg Conference and Exposition in New Orleans was, as usual, bigger and better than ever before. This year there were over 1000 companies exhibiting their analytical equipment and services. The exhibition floor was about a half a block wide and over two city blocks long. During the three days EPL concentrated on automated Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) equipment. We intend to add this capability to keep up with new UPLC technology added recently, that can chromatograph samples in a few minutes, compared to 30 to 60 minutes for the last generation of HPLCs.

The technical program was equally impressive with over 2200 technical papers presented over a five day period. This was the second year that Pittcon co-programmed with the American Chemical Society making the combined program more diverse than before From the technical papers we identified several ideas that may reduce analysis time on our conventional HPLCs and reduce time required to clean up samples for HPLC analysis.
December 2 - 6, 2007 Section D02 ASTM International Meeting
An EPL BAS chemist attended the December 2 - 6, 2007 Section D02 (Petroleum Products and Lubricants) ASTM International Meeting in Phoenix, AZ. This organization is a voluntary, not-for-profit institution well known for its development of standards for materials, products, systems, and services.

Symposium Entrepreneurship

Robin King was sponsored by Millikin University recently to participate with Dr. James Dahl, Dean of the Tabor School of Business at Millikin in the 23rd annual Price-Babson Symposium for Entrepreneurship Educators. Colleges and Universities from around the world sent teams of two, an active entrepreneur and an academic member of the institution, to participate in an intensive four day program exploring the “art and craft” of teaching and learning the entrepreneurial process.

The Babson-Price Symposium for Entrepreneurship Educators (SEE) has been the leading program to train entrepreneurship educators (academics and entrepreneurs) since its inception in 1984. Under the leadership of Jeffry Timmons, this program based at Babson College in Babson Park, MA just outside Boston, has profoundly altered the landscape of business education in American and abroad.
